James McClean’s brutal reaction to Celtic favourite Shaun Maloney getting sacked by Wigan
Shaun Maloney enjoyed a fruitful career during his playing days, including spending six years in the colours of Celtic.
The versatile forward started his career at Celtic Park and he proceeded to win five trophies in Glasgow, including three Premiership titles.
The 47-cap Scotland star also enjoyed some great moments in England’s top-tier, representing Wigan Athletic and Celtic legend Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa.
But life in management has brought about its challenges for Maloney, who also worked as an assistant to Roberto Martinez at Belgium, before he took up the main hotseat himself.
The 42-year-old started his managerial career at Easter Road in 2021, but Maloney left Hibernian less than a year later after losing the Scottish Cup semi-final to Hearts.
That road led to the one-time Celtic favourite taking the gig at English League One side, Wigan Athletic in 2023.
James McClean slams Wigan Athletic for sacking Shaun Maloney
After being in charge for over two years, Wigan sacked Maloney on Sunday and it hasn’t gone down well with many, including the club’s own fans.
Another name who wanted to vent his anger at the sacking is Celtic-mad James McClean.
McClean isn’t afraid to say what he feels and the Irishman took to his Instagram story to sarcastically mock and blast those in charge of Wigan and for their treatment of Maloney.
“Right, Shaun (Maloney), you have to get rid of your experienced players,” wrote McClean in a sarcastic manner.
“Here is a bunch of kids. You have no budget, by the way. We will sell your best players each window, but we want you to perform miracles in the league also.
“Regards, (Mike) Danson (Wigan owner) and lapdog, (Gregor) Rioch (Wigan sporting director).”
Maloney’s record as a manager
Maloney’s last game in charge was Wigan’s 2-1 home defeat to Reading and that leaves them 15th in League One.
That’s away from danger – and it’s more than good enough for what the powers that be have been serving up or the platform they have laid for their now-departed manager.
But it won’t be too long before Maloney is back in the dugout and showcasing his worth because he did a healthy job at Wigan given the circumstances he was under.
