Match Awards von Bayern Münchens opportunistischem 3:1-Sieg gegen den VfB Stuttgart
After conceding a first half goal, Bayern Munich clawed back three unanswered goals to earn a tough three points at Stuttgart. The 3-1 win gives Bayern an 11-point lead atop the Bundesliga table.
Jersey Swap: Angelo Stiller
For the first 30 minutes, Stuttgart was arguably the better team. Bayern was on its heels and ultimately punished in the 34th minute when Stiller caught Manuel Neuer in a bad position and ripped a left-footed laser. Ironically, this was the last moment of the match that Stuttgart had any momentum.
Der Kaiser: Eric Dier
Dier spent a decade at Tottenham turning in solid performances. He doesn’t do anything fancy or spectacular but is infinitely reliable at the center-back position. In today’s win, Dier won ten clearances, 7 aerial duels, and all 3 of his ground duels. He accomplished all of that without committing a foul or earning a booking.
Fußballgott: João Palhinha
At Braga, Sporting CP, and Fulham, Palhinha started 20+ league matches in each of the last five seasons. Aleksandar Pavlović was a late scratch due to illness, forcing Vincent Kompany to play Palhinha. In his fourth Bundesliga start, Palhinha slowly adjusted to the match and showcased why Bayern paid €51M for him last summer.
Particularly in the second half, he locked down the middle of the pitch. He finished the night winning six of eight ground duels, along with both aerial duels. Throw in a 97% passing rate and only losing possession twice, and Palhinha can go home with a deserved award.
Der Bomber: Michael Olise
Olise’s goal, along with a painfully long VAR review, demoralized Stuttgart right before the halftime whistle. Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané had similar opportunities in the first half but squandered those chances. This was far from Olise’s best performance but he provided the crucial goal when Bayern needed a moment of inspiration.
Meister of the Match: Leon Goretzka
After being slow to close down Stiller’s goal in the first half, Goretzka was looking like the scapegoat. Instead, Goretzka fueled the comeback victory with a relentless energy that prevented Stuttgart from registering a shot on goal the entire second half. In the 64th minute, Alexander Nübel played a hospital ball out of the back and Goretzka anticipated the following pass. Goretzka buried the resulting shot and claimed the game winner on behalf of Bayern’s glorified 125-year history.
Goretzka’s 98% passing rate surpassed Palhinha’s impressive night. Between the pair of central midfielders, they only made two inaccurate passes. After being told to pack his bags last year, Goretzka has constantly delivered impressive, all-out performances to earn his place in the squad. Bayern is supposedly planning to still kick him out this summer and that feels like a big mistake at the moment.
