Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace was admitted to the hospital following a terrifying challenge by Millwall’s goalie during the FA Cup match.
After Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts was sent off right away for colliding with
Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round match between
Millwall and Crystal Palace was tarnished by a horrifying challenge.
In the eighth minute of the match, with the score still at zero, 30-year-old Lions
goalie Roberts was sent off when he sprinted off his line and collided with Mateta,
seeming to hit the French striker’s jaw with his boot.
Although the backup keeper first won the ball, he followed through on his challenge
after a long ball over the top of the Millwall defense had forced Roberts out of his area.
His foot kicked Mateta in the head before the rest of his body followed.
Referee Michael Oliver was given a straight red card when VAR suggested that he reassess the incident,
even though Roberts had not been sent off at first.
Mateta needed extensive medical attention, including oxygen on the field, before being
carried off to a standing ovation from the home crowd. He was led to an ambulance that was waiting.
“We know that he has a head injury and a bad gash behind his ear,
” Palace chairman Steve Parish told the BBC. “I have followed football for a long time,
and I have never seen a challenge like this. I believe that was the most careless tackle I
have ever witnessed on a football field, and I believe the boy has to examine himself
carefully because he is putting himself in danger.
