Sunderland given automatic promotion boost as Leeds United and rivals warned
Sunderland can still use the automatic promotion spots to go into the Premier League. Former
Black Cats defender Darren Williams, who made more than 250 appearances for the team,
including more than 100 in the Premier League, has that opinion.

Despite the huge difference between Sunderland in fourth position and the three teams above
them—Leesburg, Sheffield United, and Burnley—Williams has maintained that the Black Cats
can still qualify for automatic promotion this season. Sunderland is aiming to return to the
Premier League this season.
Williams continues to believe. “It can be [done] yeah, definitely, without a shadow of a doubt,”
he stated in an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport podcast. To be completely honest,
I wouldn’t take my eyes off the second place.I believe it is attainable. Listen, there may be a chance
that we will place second. Of course, we’ve just brought on two knocks with the injuries [Dan Ballard
and Enzo Le Fée], exhaustion, etc. But there is absolutely no reason why we can’t make that.
“However, you have to be realistic and realise that you can’t rely solely on the fact that we are currently 12 points ahead of the playoffs, as that complacency will set in.”
Williams’ remarks partially mirror those of Luke O’Nien, a Sunderland mainstay, who stated that the team would continue to fight until the very end of the season. This evening, O’Nien will play in his 300th Sunderland game against Sheffield Wednesday.
