Norwich City in new contract talks with crucial duo amid transfer interest

Norwich City are in talks over new contracts for both Borja Sainz and Marcelino Nunez, sporting director Ben Knapper has said.

Norwich City have had a topsy-turvy season but they’re not done in the play-off fight yet. NCFC sit 10th in the Championship table, four points off the top six.

Inconsistency has plagued the Canaries but on their day, they’ve shown they can be one of the division’s more potent attacking sides.

Key to their success are Borja Sainz and Marcelino Nunez, but their fine Championship performances have not gone unnoticed. Both stars have drawn interest from abroad over the course of this season.

Now though, Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper has revealed efforts are being made to tie the key pair down to new contracts.

As quoted by the Pink Un, Knapper insisted that while dialogue is ongoing with Sainz and Nunez’s representatives, there’s no conclusion in sight either way yet. The NCFC figure said:

“There are conversations ongoing in both cases.

“There’s been good dialogue with the camps of both of those players, and that will continue.

“Ultimately, these things take time, and you need to try to find alignment between all parties. There’s no conclusion either way on any of those scenarios.

“I’m sure as the coming weeks play out and we start to see how things look for us as a club in terms of the play-offs, the potential involvement in those and the possibility of us not even being in this division next year – that will obviously have an impact as well, particularly from the players’ perspective.

“They are both live issues, but at the same time, we’re relaxed about it. Things will play out in the way they do, and we’ll react. I’m sure we will get a good outcome for the club, whatever the situation.”

Key players this season

Sainz has taken the Norwich City headlines this season with his impressive goalscoring return. 15 goals and four assists in 29 league games has him among the Championship’s most productive attacking players of the campaign.

The 24-year-old has been back in the fray in recent weeks after a five-game suspension, while Chilean midfield standout Nunez has been heavily depended on in the middle.

Four goals and two assists in 22 outings marks a notable contribution and he’s widely tipped to be the next midfield ace to go onto bigger and better things after starring at NCFC.

A summer fight ahead

Norwich City hold ambitions of returning to their previous Premier League heights and keeping influential players like Sainz and Nunez will be key in the bid to get back to that level.

However, come the summer, it seems inevitable that they attract interest from elsewhere. Tying them down to new deals would go a long way to fending off bids, but clubs could still look to prise them away from Carrow Road.

Fans will be eager to see ground made up on the contract front but regardless, speculation over potential summer moves seems inevitable.
