Sunderland AFC pipped Ipswich Town to “talent” but hype has not been matched yet
On first glance, it appeared that Speakman was correct, with the then-20-year-old delivering
some smooth displays in the heart of the Black Cats’ midfield as the club secured promotion via
the play-offs.

However, Matete has yet to live up to the hype following a major injury and a series of League
One loan appearances, so the Tractor Boys will not be concerned about losing him.
Kieran McKenna played down Matete bid
The battle for Matete went down to the wire, with the Lambeth native joining Sunderland on
deadline day despite conversations with the Tractor Boys.
Speaking about the agreement, Town manager Kieran McKenna said there was interest in the
player’s services but denied a bid was ever submitted.
McKenna stated, “He’s a player we were aware of and had spoken about; obviously, he’d played
against Ipswich earlier in the season.”
“At the time, we thought we had good coverage and options in those spots. After Tyreeq
(Bakinson) came in on loan, we didn’t think we needed another body.
Kristjaan Speakman praised Sunderland’s Jay Matete acquisition
Matete’s arrival from Fleetwood Town was reason for excitement, considering the player’s
form and Speakman’s high praise.
Speakman said of Matete’s signing: “He is a highly sought-after talent, and during the season
he has garnered fans from the Premier League and the Championship, highlighting not only the
level of his performances but also his exceptional potential.
“We believe that we have the optimal environment in place to maximise his ability, and we look
forward to supporting him in his development, as he takes the next step in his career.”
