After a contract dispute, Derby County’s £1 million acquisition ended in frustration.
Luke Varney must have spent a large portion of his playing career living out of a suitcase because during his
18-year professional career, he played for up to eleven different clubs in the top four divisions.
While some clubs only had him for a season or two, others only had him for a game or two,
but wherever he was playing, he was always effective when given the chance to score.
Derby County will probably have to rely on others to say that because the Rams only saw the forward play
12 times for them after his loan from Charlton Athletic was made permanent in the winter of 2009.
Luke Varney’s transfer to Derby County hampered by contract scenario
In his early playing days, Varney gained a reputation as bit of a hotshot after rising from non-league
Quorn to Charlton Athletic via Crewe Alexandra. In the summer of 2007,
the Addicks reportedly spent £2 million to get him for the Valley.
However, the striker was back on the move after just a season in south London. A loan period at
Derby was agreed upon until the end of the year, with the agreement becoming permanent on January 1,
even though he played 18 league games for his current employers until November.
