I Saw It Coming!” – Birmingham City Star Reveals Why Aston Villa Clash Was Always Going to Land Him on Soccer AM!
Former Birmingham City star David Dunn has revealed how his failed Rabona against Aston Villa in 2003 came back to haunt him.
Dunn, who was a big money signing ahead of Blues’ second season back in the Premiership, arrived with a reputation as a creative player, not afraid to take risks to produce chances for team-mates
He made a solid start to his career under Steve Bruce with goals in two of his first three matches. However, his first Second City derby did not pass without incident – one that is still played back to this day.
The former midfielder tried an audacious Rabona but barely made contact with the ball before falling in an embarrassed heap on the St Andrew’s turf.
In an interview with Undr the Cosh he said: “I’ve done it loads of times In my mind I have anyway and it’s worked.
“So when I’m at Birmingham, I see [Mikael] Forssell making a little run, and I think ‘He’s on here, I’m going to produce this’. Just as I’m doing it, pop, little bobble.
“And they countered on us by the way, and I remember sprinting back, well, jogging back and thinking ‘Please don’t score’ I must have said it about 25 times on the way back and it just went past the post.
“The first thing I thought in my mind, that’s Soccer AM, that’s ‘Taxi for Dunn.’ I couldn’t concentrate on my game for the rest of it.”
Unfortunately for him the incident continues to be played. “Two or three years after I walked into Currys and there’s probably 60 tellies all facing you when you walk in. I’m thinking ‘We’ll get one, plasmas are over there, come on, let’s have a look’.
“All of a sudden the SkyPlayer advert comes on and it’s me in it. I’m on every screen and it was one of them really uncomfortable moments where I’m thinking ‘What am I doing here?’
“I don’t know where to look. I’m in the toasters ‘What about the toasters do we need a new toaster?’ Dishwashers ‘Let’s get in’.
“All the staff then make it really uncomfortable for me because they’re looking at the screen and then they’re looking at me and thinking, is it him? It is him. It is him.”
Dunn’s Blues career was undermined by injuries and he ended up returning to Blackburn after only 69 appearances in three-and-a-half seasons. He has since gone into management.
