Kemar Roofe shirt number revealed after Derby County transfer

Former Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has been handed the number nine shirt at Derby County after securing his move to Pride Park yesterday.

The ex-Leeds striker has penned a deal until the end of the season and is in line to be included in the squad that will face Millwall in John Eustace’s first home game in charge tomorrow (12.30pm).

Derby moved to sign Roofe to help bolster their attacking options for the remainder of the season and will compete for a place in the frontline with Lars-Jorgen Salvesen and Jerry Yates.

Fellow strikers Dajaune Brown (hamstring) is currently injured and looks set to be out for the season while Conor Washington was not even registered on the EFL squad list.

Roofe will now wear the number nine shirt that was vacated by last season’s top scorer James Collins who sealed a move to Lincoln City in the January transfer window.

Roofe, 32, has plenty of Championship experience having played for Leeds United in the second tier but he was most recently at Rangers where he counts the Scottish Premier League title as one of his honours.

He left Ibrox at the end of last season, but had not been able to find a club although had been keeping himself in shape while he was waiting for his next move.

Speaking about the deal yesterday, Roofe said: “It’s a move that I wasn’t expecting at all from start to finish, but I won’t get into the meat of it because it’s all complicated, but the final part is the most important and I’m here now and I’m excited to get going.

“It has been all about mental strength, just to getting through what I needed to get through and also having the drive and the focus to stay fit and keep working on myself and keep running every day, keep doing my gym work every day until the opportunity came along and finally it has.”
