Celtic set for €7.9m UEFA payday – With more to come

Celtic will receive €7.9 million (£6.7m) from UEFA this Friday as part of their earnings from the Champions League knockout phase.

This payment comes after their last-16 play-off exit to Bayern Munich, where Brendan Rodgers’ side came agonisingly close to forcing extra time in Germany.

The Hoops will also be due another €1 million (£850k) on March 21 for reaching the knockout round.

Had Celtic managed to knock out Bayern Munich and reach the last 16, they would have banked a further €11 million (£9.3m)—a significant sum that could have further strengthened their financial position. [GrandOLDTeam]

Despite the heartbreak in Munich, Celtic’s European campaign has restored their reputation on the continent and ensured a healthy financial boost heading into the summer transfer window.

The Hoops were so close to taking Bayern Munich to extra time, just 20 seconds away from the full-time whistle.

There’s nothing to suggest that Celtic would’ve gone on to win the game, with the players clearly getting tired, but they had just half an hour to hold on and take the game to penalties.

Brendan Rodgers got everything spot on against Bayern, and it should show the club that in the summer, if backed right, he can take Celtic to the next level on the European stage.
