Celtic miss out on £9m Champions League fortune but bank record prize money as total earnings revealed

Football can be a cruel mistress and Celtic know that more than most after their Champions League elimination.

A last-gasp equaliser sent Bayern Munich through to the last 16 at the expense of Brendan Rodgers and his men. Alphonso Davies stole in behind Cameron Carter-Vickers to clinch the late 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena. But Celtic will not go home empty handed despite their Champions League disappointment.

Once the dust settles the club hierarchy will take comfort when they look at the club accounts. The new UEFA Swiss Model has created a bulkier format – and more prize money as a result. Celtic smashed their transfer record twice over the summer to bring in Adam Idah and Arne Engels. And if the prize money they earned this season is anything to go by then another summer splurge could be on the cards.

Record Sport has dusted off the old calculator to work out exactly how much Celtic made during their European campaign.

What is the Champions League prize money?

  • Winner : £21m
  • Runner-up : £15.6m

Celtic will also be due another chunky sum from UEFA – around £3.4m to be precise after securing an 21st place finish in the table – taking their overall total so far for this year’s event to a very tidy £26.23m.

How much would Celtic have earned from Champions League play off progress?

Celtic have already been handed a tidy £843,000 just for reaching the playoffs. If they were to progress further they would have raked in a whopping £9.3m. None of these figures take into account ticket sales, however.
