JUST IN: Reasons for Not Allowing Michael Oliver to Officiate the Carabao Cup Final Between Liverpool and Newcastle
Due to criticism of some of his previous rulings, Premier League official Michael Oliver will not be allowed to oversee
Liverpool vs. Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final next month. In the 2-2 draw between Everton and Liverpool,
Oliver was the man in the middle. The game featured a number of contentious calls,
including the awarding of four red cards following the final whistle.
The referee, who has been officiating in the top flight since 2010, has become one of the most well-known figures
in the English game and has been the target of threats online this year. He will be barred from participating in
the match between Eddie Howe’s Magpies and Arne Slot’s Reds at Wembley, though, due to one rule.
Oliver’s decision to leave as manager on March 16th will undoubtedly be welcomed by Liverpool supporters,
but it has nothing to do with his recent performance in the Merseyside derby. Rather, it is due to the
39-year-old’s loyalty to Newcastle, which prevents him from playing in any of their games.
Northumberland native Oliver, who has been photographed wearing the iconic black and white,
stated in a Daily Mail interview that all referees are required to inform the PGMOL whose teams they support.
“If we have a family member who works at a club or if we are affiliated with any clubs, we must disclose this.
Newcastle needed a point to stay in business.
