Just In: Unai Emery discusses Aston Villa’s offensive “challenge.”
Donyell Malen, Marcus Rashford, and Marco Asensio have given Emery a plethora of options in the final third,
but he now needs to figure out how to effectively weave them together. Rashford and Asensio,
who were signed on loan from Manchester United and Paris St-Germain, respectively,
are vying for their first starts in Wednesday’s home game against Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Emery stated: “It’s a challenge for me because I have to try to use their individual qualities and skills and
align them with their defensive and offensive responsibilities.” “It’s a different combination with the players,
how they can understand what they need to do when it’s Jacob (Ramsey) with Marcus – Marcus with (Ollie)
Watkins – Marco with Morgan (Rogers), or Leon (Bailey) or Malen.”
“To be as powerful as possible, both offensively and defensively, we need players who can play a variety of roles inside our structure.
“After that, they must each execute and apply their abilities. Balancing the players both individually and collectively is my challenge. Although Emery has instructed all of his attacking players to be capable of playing a variety of positions, he thinks Morgan Rogers might be his squad’s most adaptable attacker.
He explained: “Morgan can play very well as a No.10 but he is also quite efficient when he gets wide on the left side or right side.
