The release clause for Jamal Musiala at Bayern Munich was disclosed, and there’s a fascinating twist.
On Valentine’s Day, Bayern Munich supporters collectively exhaled with relief as the team’s outstanding player, Jamal Musiala, agreed to a five-year contract extension. After six months of negotiations, a settlement started to seem imminent. That did not, however, imply that everything went smoothly.
The release clause was one of the main points of contention. Bayern has historically disapproved using release clauses in contracts, arguing that the club will help a player sell if they genuinely choose to leave. However, Bayern broke the ice and incorporated a release clause (reportedly €80M) after Harry Kane moved to Germany.
After Musiala’s squad made a strong push for a release clause, Bayern eventually gave up the point.
Sky claims that the release clause for Jamal Musiala goes into effect this summer. In the summers of 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028, its value is €175 million; in the summer of 2029, it drops to €100 million.
For comparison, in order to make this a fair financial exchange, all but six Bundesliga clubs would need to sell their whole roster. Bayern most likely agreed to the stipulations because only a select few clubs worldwide could afford this deal.
The clause’s most intriguing aspect is that, with one year left on Musiala’s contract, it decreases to a far more manageable €100M. If Musiala chooses to leave Bayern for better opportunities, that is a reasonable price for a player of his caliber.
