Putting that strategy into action, and executing it flawlessly, is a completely different issue, as Sunderland head to Elland Road to finish the weekend’s action.

Sunderland, who are fourth and still in the running for automatic promotion, may fall ten points

behind the leaders if Leeds United win for the fourth week in a row and potentially keep a seventh consecutive Championship clean sheet at Elland Road.

The visiting Black Cats must find a delicate balance between playing to their own strengths and

stopping Leeds from getting into their stride.

Regis Le Bris explains what Sunderland must do to stop a rampant Leeds United

“We just have to focus on our game,” Le Bris said at the pre-match press conference.

“We understand they are a menace and can be deadly. So, if we are naive, we may be penalised. However, if we don’t play our best football, it won’t matter.”

Sunderland’s strong record against the Championship’s heavy hitters is, at the very least,

encouraging. The Black Cats have taken four points from Burnley, defeated Sheffield United,

and completed a double over their north east neighbours Middlesbrough.
In October, Sunderland managed a gallant draw at home against Leeds. A calamitous Illan

Meslier error in stoppage time, however, gifted and sealed the point with a kiss.

“We have played well away against the best teams so far, and I believe we have the qualities to

play against this type of opponent,” adds the softly spoken Frenchman in the Black Cats dugout, acknowledging that the game could be decided by Sunderland’s ability to keep the perennial fast starters from charging out of the blocks.
