Financial fines are more likely to be imposed on the two teams, according to the former PGMOL

chief and ex-FIFA official, and a sporting punishment is “unlikely” to result.

On Wednesday night (12 February), the two sides faced off in a tense final Merseyside derby at

Goodison Park.

After Everton controversially took the lead through Beto, Liverpool came back to lead due to goals

from Alexis MacAllister and Mo Salah.

However, James Tarkwoski’s equaliser deep into second-half stoppage time guaranteed that the

Toffees snatched a point late on, sparking further controversy after the final whistle.

Everton vs Liverpool desecends into chaos

At the end of the game, Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure began to celebrate in front of the

away end.

Curtis Jones responded angrily, resulting in a confrontation between Everton and Liverpool players

and officials.

Doucoure and Jones were both sent off for their roles in the melee, as were Arne Slot and his

assistant, and a bottle thrown from the fans during the Liverpool-Everton match is also expected

to be dealt with by authorities.
