“We saw how they celebrated the goal, they have all the right to.”
Last night’s Merseyside derby, the last at Goodison Park, did not disappoint, with James Tarkowski scoring in the 98th minute to win the Toffees a 2-2 draw. The triumph puts the Reds seven points clear of Arsenal in second place, while Everton extended their Premier League unbeaten streak under David Moyes to four games, leaving them in 15th.

In his post-game interview with TNT Sports, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had a dig at Everton. After Tarkowski’s late equalizer, mayhem ensued between the two teams, resulting in the dismissals of Arne Slot, Curtis Jones, and Abdoulaye Doucouré. And, in his post-match interview, Van Dijk made a statement that fans described as ‘brutal’.

Speaking to TNT Sports, the Netherlands international said: “We watched how they celebrated the goal, and they have every right to. “I believe Abdoulaye Doucoure intended to irritate our fans; that is what I witnessed, and Curtis Jones did not think that was the correct thing to do. And you know what happens if there is a minor scuffle.

“I did not believe the referee had the game under control. Both teams had to deal with the situation. This was the cup final. “I think the referee had a big part in the game, in terms of certain challenges were given as fouls and similar weren’t.”
