Frank Lampard provides verdict on Matt Grimes’ full Coventry City debut
Frank Lampard has given his verdict on new signing Matt Grimes’ first start for Coventry City.
The January capture from Swansea made his full debut for the Sky Blues in Tuesday night’s last gasp 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers when there was a lot of hope and expectation on his shoulders that he’d immediately take the team’s midfield to another level. That feeling had been fuelled by talk in South Wales that the Swans’ skipper’s departure had left a gaping hole at the Swansea.com Stadium.
In the event it was a difficult and hard-fought game in which the 29-year-old showed plenty of quality, displaying a good range of passing in a holding midfield role while almost getting on the scoresheet with a hard and low shot that required the visiting goalkeeper to make a good early save in the game. Head coach Lampard, however, hinted that there’s plenty more to come from the experienced player.
Asked how he felt Grimes did in his first full game for the club, Lampard said: “Really good, although I don’t think it was an easy game for Matt to come in and control like I think he can control games. But I think what he did, he did well.
“He’s a really good footballer who offers so much to this team in terms of his technical ability and how he will affect people around him with the way he plays.
“I thought there were some tough things in the game, some tough moments with midfield transitions and I don’t think it was a calm, calm game for either team. And I thought Grimesy showed that he’s got lots of tools, not just the tool of having the ball and what he can do for us, so I am really pleased.”
