Three Talking Points as Oxford United Draw at Derby

Oxford United saw their latest fixture end in a goalless draw at Pride Park against relegation-threatened Derby.

It was a non-event for most of the game but the U’s left the East Midlands with what could be a vital point come the end of the season.

Here are three talking points from the game.

Oxford United Draw at Derby

Lack of Attacking Impetus

Oxford headed into the break having had just one attempt on the Derby goal.

That came from Siriki Dembele midway through the first half when his long-range effort was tipped over by the Rams goalkeeper.

Despite attempts on goal after the break, that shot was the only one on target that Rowett’s side mustered all game.

It was a frustrating evening for the travelling Oxford fans, who have now found the net just once in their last four games.

Clean Sheet

Having conceded an unfortunate own goal at Burnley last time out, it was important for Oxford’s defence to show their resoluteness again.

Jamie Cumming was tested between the sticks but, on the whole, the backline put in another decent display.

The fullbacks didn’t get forward as often as they have in recent weeks, but as a unit defensively, they rarely put a foot wrong when the hosts attacked.

Feisty Encounter

There may have only been one yellow card in the game but it was a high-tempered encounter from both sets of players.

The referee was often in the spotlight with both sides nibbling at opposing players, shirt pulls and hefty shoulder barges in what was a physical evening.

This may have contributed to the poor viewing from both sides on the pitch but it’s a point on the road ahead of another important game at the weekend.
