Interesting Newcastle United comparison made about Leeds after demolition job vs Watford
Leeds United came, saw and conquered at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night, breezing past Watford as the Whites go from strength to strength this season.
There doesn’t seem to be a team in the entire Football League who could possibly stop Leeds United right now.
Daniel Farke’s side are bruising their way to promotion to the Premier League having put another easy three points on the board on Tuesday, thumping Watford 4-0 away from home.
Dan James scored twice and Manor Solomon added a third before half-time. After the break, Joel Piroe’s magic footwork and neat finishing netted a fourth for the Whites who now boast a five point lead over Sheffield United in 2nd.
Farke hailed his Leeds United players after the win. His side are now unbeaten in 14 league games having won each of their last three games to nil, with six clean sheets in a row for Illan Meslier.
As things stand, Leeds have 69 points on the board with 42 left to play for. The Whites may well be eyeing up that 106 points record set by Reading in 206, with Leeds able to muster 111 points if they win their remaining 14 games, which is of course possible, albeit unlikely.
Tom Cleverley compares Leeds United to Newcastle United’s 2009/10 side
Over the years there’s been some formidable Championship title winners. Leeds United’s 2024/25 side could go down as one of those teams, and Watford manager Tom Cleverley has even drawn comparisons between this Leeds side and the Newcastle United side of 2009/10.
The Magpies were relegated in 2009 but spent just one season in the second tier. Chris Hughton guided the club to the Championship title that season with a whopping 102 points, doing so with a side that boasted some huge talent at the time including Fabricio Coloccini, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll.
Cleverley said after Tuesday’s game: “We’ve been well beaten by a side who is an exceptional one at this level. I think back to the Newcastle side with Coloccini and all those in, Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side, and for me they’re one of the best I’ve seen at this level. They seem to be brushing everyone aside at the minute, not conceded a goal for more than a month.”
How many points did Burnley get in 2022/23?
Burnley under Kompany in 2022/23 are another side that will go down in the Championship history books. Like Leeds this season, there was nothing stopping that Clarets that years, as they put 101 points on the board on their way to the title.
For Leeds then, putting another 20 or so points on the board could seal promotion to the Premier League. That would mean averaging 1.43 points per game for the remainder of the season.
Farke though will want his players to maintain this current level right until the end. Securing promotion is the first and foremost priority and then seeing if they could break the Championship record should be the next.
Leeds will want to leave their mark on the second tier and wins like the one at Watford certainly does so.
