Aston Villa coach replaces Thomas Tuchel assistant as statement made on Villa Park role
Austin MacPhee, Aston Villa’s set-piece coach, has been named Portugal’s assistant manager.
MacPhee will continue to work for Unai Emery at Villa Park while also taking on a new
international duty under Roberto Martinez. He replaces Anthony Barry, who departed Portugal to
work for new England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Portugal announced MacPhee’s hiring with the following statement: “Austin MacPhee is the new member of the Men’s National Team’s Technical Team.”
“National coach Roberto Martinez has appointed the Scottish set-piece specialist to his staff,
replacing Anthony Barry.
“MacPhee, 45, is a member of the technical team of Aston Villa, an English Premier League club
with which he will continue to have a contractual tie, while also serving the FPF on FIFA national
team days.
“The coach, born on October 11, 1979, in Kirkcaldy (Scotland), had a career at St Mirren, Heart of Midlothian, and FC Midtjylland (Denmark) before joining Aston Villa in August 2021, working in the Premier League and Champions League.”
“MacPhee also served as an assistant coach at Euro 2016 with Northern Ireland and Euro 2024 with Scotland.
“Austin MacPhee will work with Martínez in March, when Portugal face Denmark in the Nations
League quarter-finals.”
