“We have to question overserlves” – Sunderland man issues rallying call to teammates, urges them to ‘do more’
Towards the end of last summer, Sunderland let Pierre Ekwah join AS Saint-Étienne on a season-long loan deal.
The defensive midfielder has been a regular for the Ligue 1 club this season and made 17 league starts so far.
Saint-Étienne secured promotion to the top division and risk dropping out after a year as they are currently 16th of 18 in the Ligue 1 table. The Sunderland man has issued a rallying call to his teammates to help the French club avoid getting relegated.
Ekwah told this to Envertetcontretous, a website dedicating its coverage to Saint-Étienne, after their 2-0 defeat to Stade Rennais last weekend.
The Sunderland owned player has urged his teammates to step up and if they fail to do so, Saint-Étienne could be in trouble. They are three points behind 15th placed FC Nantes and four behind 14th placed Stade de Reims.
“We have to keep going, never stop. We’ve still got a whole season to go, and if we stop now, we’re in trouble,” he said.
“We have to keep working, keep doing more because that means we’re maybe not doing enough. We have to question ourselves if we haven’t already. You need the psychological aspect to play at Saint-Étienne. I’m sure we have it. We’re going to make sure that Saint-Étienne stays in Ligue 1.”
The Frenchman has also talked about the need for Saint-Étienne to avoid repeating mistakes.
Saint-Étienne have an option to buy the player from Sunderland at the end of this season. Two months ago, Ekwah stated he’s already thinking about his future and hinted it will be away from the Black Cats.
