Koke considers Atlético retirement amid upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
In an interview regarding the recently reorganized FIFA Club World Cup, Atletico Madrid captain Jorge Resurrección Merodio “Koke” talked about his possible retirement from football, which may happen sooner than expected.
Koke told FIFA, “I don’t know if I will be able to play for four more years, and my career is almost over, so to speak.” “We must have fun during the tournament and strive to win this title, which is something new. I believe that every team, player, and participant wants to win.”
Koke, who has made a club-record 671 appearances for Atlético, signed a one-year contract renewal in March that includes a “annual review” condition, in which he needs to let the club know (before to the end of the current season) whether he wants to stay or depart. The 2024/25 campaign has seen Koke, for the first time, lose his place as an unquestioned starter under Diego Simeone – raising suspicion that he may be playing his final months for the club he has served since he was six years old.
In all competitions, Koke has started 21 of his 34 games, establishing himself as Simeone’s first midfielder off the bench while Pablo Barrios develops into the captain’s eventual replacement.
