Derby County manager Paul Warne has branded his £50,000 fine from the Football Association as a “disgrace” and announced he will appeal against the decision.
The FA charged Paul Warne with misconduct for remarks he made to Sky Sports during Derby County’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City,
and Warne was struck with the fine and a stadium suspension for one game postponed on Saturday.
Here, we refer to the FA’s charge criteria to gain a better understanding of Paul’s punishment for his remarks.
What was said by Paul?
“I know it’s a lot of fun to bring us down when we’re winning,
but when you’re losing,
I think you need to be a little more honest and let people know that the officials are scared to call Norwich City’s games.
I’ll say it again: if the FA wants to discipline me,
they may do so; they don’t discipline other managers; I don’t mind.
However, I want to do it again because I believe my players and our supporters deserve it,
and I also support Norwich.
To reiterate, referees are hesitant to make decisions for Norwich.
It was decided that Paul had violated FA Rule E3 by implying that referees are “afraid” to make decisions for Norwich. The FA‘s media comment standards categorize these kinds of remarks into two groups.
Unsuitable remarks that defame the game,
including those that are offensive, threatening, abusive, or indecent.
– Remarks concerning match officials that are personally offensive, suggest bias,
or cast doubt on their integrity.
What follows?
During his news conference on Friday, Paul stated that he would appeal his £50,000 fine and suspended one-match stadium ban.
Paul will have to pay the entire fine if his appeal is denied.
If an Independent Regulatory Commission determines that he has violated FA Rule E3 for any comments made to or through the media prior to February 15, 2025, his suspended stadium ban will be instantly triggered.
