Unai Emery axes two new Aston Villa signings from Champions League squad
Villa acquired Malen from Borussia Dortmund last month in a deal valued at €23 million (£19m)
plus €3 million (£2.5m) in additional clauses, while Garcia joined on a £7m transfer from Levante
in Spain.

Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio, and Axel Disasi also signed for Villa on a temporary agreement
during the transfer window in January.
Villa finished eighth in the Champions League after eight matches and has automatically secured
their position in the knockout stage, meaning they will face Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta, Sporting
CP, or Club Brugge in the last 16.
Villa was only able to register three new players for the next phase of the Champions League,
and Emery decided to include Rashford, Asensio, and Disasi.
“We implemented more modifications in the transfer window than we anticipated.” Although
we lost an additional one because Jaden [Philogene] had club-trained status, we missed the
opportunity to have another.
We modified five teams and we can only register three. Andres Garcia and Donyell Malen are responsible for the decisions we had to make yesterday.
Of course, yesterday I had to make an incorrect decision, but I talked with Andres and Donyell to
inform them about the decision, and I debated about my choice with them.
