The £800 million decision that PIF must make now is a result of what Newcastle United supporters did at St. James’ Park.
When Newcastle United defeated Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night,
St. James’ Park was electrified. The players understood the significance of the match,
and the supporters knew exactly what they had to do to scare Arsenal.
It appeared as though Mikel Arteta’s team was in shock when they arrived at
St. James’ Park for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, a match in
which they had to overcome a two-goal deficit. The Magpies got off to a quick
start thanks to an early goal from Jacob Murphy, doubled their lead in the second half,
and won the match thanks to Anthony Gordon’s close-range finish in the second half.
The atmosphere was some of the best heard at the stadium in years, but it might be
something Newcastle fans will have to create in a new stadium in the future
. On Wednesday, every Newcastle player on the field contributed to the atmosphere
and kept the fans entertained throughout the game, and they even joked with Arteta when they were comfortably ahead.
PIF needs to decide what’s best for Newcastle supporters.
After plans for a £1.2 billion stadium for Newcastle were unveiled this week,
which would involve demolishing St. James’ Park, speculation about a new stadium exploded.
There are two choices for Newcastle: either build a new stadium or remain at St. James’ Park
and increase its capacity to about 60,000. Although St. James’ Park would require five
years and £800 million to expand, it would undoubtedly satisfy a core group of Newcastle supporters.
