According to the Premier League’s chief football officer, the possibility of Leicester City joining
Ipswich and Southampton in relegating to the Championship would be a “significant matter” for
the league to take into account.
The Tractor Boys and the Saints, with whom City was promoted in May of last year, are currently in
the bottom three. It would be the second consecutive year that the promoted clubs had fallen back
to the bottom if all three were demoted.
Even though it would only be the third time in the Premier League’s 33-year existence that it has occurred, the league’s competitiveness is at risk due to an increasing pattern of promoted teams
having difficulties. Nottingham Forest finished the previous season with 32 points, the fewest of
any remaining team, and the gap between the top and bottom is widening.
After 24 games, City currently has 17 points. That record is exactly the same as the one they had
when they were a freshly promoted club ten years ago. But at the time, they were four points from
safety and at the bottom of the standings. They are now in 18th place and only two points away from elimination.
This season, City has also suffered more losses. City had a goal differential of -17 ten years ago, even though they had the same record of four wins, five ties, and fifteen losses. It is at -28 this season.
