Norwich City sign Jacob Wright from Man City on a loan deal with a £5m conditional obligation to buy
Norwich City have completed a dramatic late deadline day loan to buy move for young
Manchester City defensive midfielder Jacob Wright.
The Canaries have swooped late to secure the services of the highly rated 19-year-old,
who saw a move to Swansea break down. That created an opportunity for Norwich to swoop,
who beat the 11pm deadline to secure a deal.
Wright joins Norwich on an initial loan deal until the rest of the season,
with the option to buy figure believed to be lower than the £5m fee quoted elsewhere.
It is also thought to include performance-based bonuses.
Speaking to official club channels, Wright said: “I’m really happy to be here,
happy to get everything over the line on time.
“I’m looking forward to getting into training tomorrow, and the games will be coming thick and fast.”
City’s sporting director Ben Knapper added: “I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to Jacob and his family.
“He is an extremely talented young player who we have been aware of and tracked for quite some time.
“We believe that his attributes and qualities, particularly in possession,
are well suited to our playing style and we’re excited to see what he can bring to our group.
“He is another fantastic addition that we are really looking forward to working with.”
The deal was confirmed at 12.30am on Tuesday morning,
with City only beginning talks over the move on Monday evening.
Norwich have earmarked Wright as a long-term target in their quest for a long-awaited defensive
midfield addition.
He becomes their fifth and final senior addition of the winter window, following Lewis Dobbin,
Matej Jurasek, Ruairi McConville and the activation of Anis Ben Slimane’s permanent option.
Wright, who joined Manchester City as an eight-year-old, played four times for Pep Guardiola’s side and was alongside fellow Canaries’ loanee Callum Doyle for their pre-season tour of the USA.
His last inclusion in Manchester City’s Premier League squad was for their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace in December.
