Michael Stewart blasts Rangers after Lyall Cameron announcement
Rangers have overlooked better domestic players than Lyall Stewart in the past, according to Michael Stewart.
The Gers have agreed on a pre-contract deal with the Dundee midfielder ahead of a summer transfer, confirming the news on Deadline Day.
The 22-year-old has notched five goals and four assists in 23 Scottish Premiership appearances so far this season.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club (3 February), Stewart said: “I think it’s a positive.
“I think Lyall Cameron is a good player that has got plenty of growth to come but I don’t think he’s as good as some that they have ignored or passed up in the recent past.”
Rangers can right the wrongs of the past
The Gers have missed out on signing some of the nation’s best talents in recent years such as Lewis Ferguson, who moved to Bologna in 2022.
They have also missed out on other domestic stars like Aaron Hickey, Josh Doig and Lawrence Shankland in recent years.
The Bears can right the wrongs of the past by tapping into the homegrown market on a more regular basis and ensuring that Scotland’s best stars do not leave for greener pastures.
Rather than take a chance on players with no experience in the Scottish Premiership, the Light Blues should take advantage of their position as one of the biggest two clubs in the nation.
The Govan club need to ensure that they have an identity, a core of Scottish players that supporters can identify with as well as great foreign gems like Hamza Igamane, Jefte and Ianis Hagi.
If they get the combination right and begin to secure the best homegrown and foreign talents, they could catch Celtic sooner rather than later.
