Fabian Hurzeler ‘under pressure’ as Brighton make sack decision
Fabian Hurzeler’s position is under increasing pressure at Brighton following their heavy 7-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on 1 February.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that losing the support of the fans could be the final nail in the coffin.
In the wake of their humiliating defeat to Nottingham Forest, Football Insider reported that Brighton fans had begun calling for the manager’s head.
The Seagulls have won just two of their last 12 Premier League games, including draws with relegation-threatened Southampton and Leicester, and a 3-1 defeat at home against bitter rivals Crystal Palace.
As a result, large sections of supporters at the Amex have been vocal in their frustrations towards the manager, as the pressure on his position continues to grow.
Brown clarified that it is currently unlikely that the 31-year-old will lose his job imminently, but a downward spiral could force the board into making a decision.
Brighton fans turning on Fabian Hurzeler after sack decision made
Hurzeler arrived at Brighton in the summer, signing a three-year contract to take him through until 2027, and has since been backed with over £250million worth of signings.
Brown, who has worked closely with multiple top-level managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Ron Atkinson and David Moyes, insisted that serious questions will be asked of the manager following the defeat to Forest.
“From what I hear, the pressure on his position is growing,” he told Football Insider.
“There’s not many times in a season when there isn’t pressure on a manger, because if you’re in the top half they want to qualify for Europe, and if you’re below that they feel they should be higher.
“There are very few situations where the manager isn’t under some sort of pressure.
“But after a 7-0 defeat, there’s always going to be added scrutiny.
“The fans start to turn on you after results like that, and when you start to lose the fans that could be the difference – we saw it with Moyes at West Ham, for example.
“I wouldn’t expect him to be sacked imminently, but serious questions are being asked.
“It’s important not to take a result in isolation, but if they start to spiral from here and drop down the table, then it’s going to be a problem.“
