Rangers finances dictate how they operate in the transfer market with Nils Koppen having to shop smarter than all of his predecessors.

Patrick Stewart spoke about the signing players for the club, rather than on the whim of

managers in a much-needed change of direction.

Bosman signings and pre-contract deals will always be alluring on a budget, but it appears like

Rangers may lose out on a highly regarded target who would be an important addition to Philippe Clement’s team.

Rangers in heavyweight chase to land Nicola Bertola

According to The Daily Mail, Koppen has had his eye on a cut-price swoop for Spezia centre-half Nicola Bertola, however,

the technical director has been dealt an early blow in the race for the towering defender’s signature.

The report claims that Inter Milan are also considering Bertola and it would be an uphill battle to compete with the Serie A champions.

Even though his stats indicate that he is more mature than that, the Italy Under-21 international,

who is 6 feet 4 inches tall, would more than be able to handle the demands of Scottish football.

Why Bertola is the perfect example of Rangers’ new transfer strategy

Encouragingly, this is exactly the type of player that Rangers need to be targeting.

Currently playing in Serie B, Bertola would jump at the chance of playing regular European football and in front

of 51,000 fans every other week at Ibrox.

Additionally, he meets all the requirements for a team looking to launch a player trading business.

The proper course of action is to replace Bertola with Ben Davies, who was described as a “brick wall” this week,

and move on with the in-form player permanently.

Despite his youth, he has participated in all three of Italy’s top divisions and has been a constant for Spezia this season.

Additionally, Bertola’s contract expires in the summer, so Rangers could afford a player who would otherwise be unaffordable.

Rangers may have their greatest opportunity if Inter pursues their interest in the gigantic stopper,

who would likely be sent out on loan initially.
