Just In: The Premier League has caused the date of the Aston Villa vs. Wolves match to be postponed.
On Saturday morning, Villa reported receiving a “increased amount” of positive test results.
Just more than two hours prior to the planned kickoff at Villa Park at 15:00 GMT,
the postponement was announced.
Villa stated they acted “as swiftly as possible” to “minimise disruption”
but nonetheless expressed regret to Burnley and their supporters.
A statement from Aston Villa read: “The club is extremely sorry for the inconvenience
caused to Burnley Football Club, both our own supporters and the Burnley fans due to attend the fixture.”
Thus, the final Premier League match left is between Leeds and Arsenal on Saturday.
The initial schedule called for six matches.
Villa-Burnley is the sixth game on this weekend’s schedule to be postponed, and the tenth
Premier League game in the last week due to COVID-19 cases within teams.
In addition to Sunday’s Everton vs. Leicester match, Manchester United vs. Brighton,
Southampton vs. Brentford, Watford vs. Crystal Palace, and West Ham vs. Norwich have already been canceled.
Wolves vs. Chelsea, Tottenham vs. Liverpool, and Newcastle vs. Manchester City are all scheduled to play on Sunday.
The decision to postpone the game by slightly more than two hours before kickoff “will
frustrate and disappoint supporters,” according to the Premier League.
