JUST IN: The new coach of Borussia Dortmund: Why Nico Kovac? Borussia Dortmund has appointed eight coaches in the past ten years.
Niko Kovac is well-known in the Bundesliga, despite perhaps not having the same ties to BVB as his predecessors Nuri Sahin and Edin Terzic. Kovac, who played for four Bundesliga teams from 1992 to 2006, will be managing a fourth when he formally takes over on February 3. With a historic German Cup victory in 2018, his first managerial stint in Germany—at Eintracht Frankfurt—remains his most spectacular.
He was hired by the defending champions of Germany after defeating Bayern Munich in the final, and he quickly added another German Cup and the Bundesliga the next season to complete the double he had achieved with Bayern in 2002–03. He had just lost his job. After a difficult start to the 2019–20 season, Bayern’s demands took their toll a few months later. Since then, he has had respectable but unimpressive periods with Wolfsburg (2022–24) and Monaco (2020–22), which have hurt his reputation. At the 2014 World Cup, he served as coach of the Croatian national team as well. Despite having been born and raised in Berlin, he has Croatian ancestry and has earned 83 caps for his nation.
