JUST IN: Aston Villa women brought Natalia Arroyo on board as their news manager.
This weekend, Aston Villa Women will play their first game against Chelsea at Villa Park. They are coming off a 4-2 loss to Manchester City, which was Shaun Goater’s final game as interim manager. This weekend, new manager Natalia Arroyo, who takes over from Robert de Pauw, will play her first game at Villa after leaving Real Sociedad at the end of the 2023–24 season. The Spaniard led them to the Copa de la Reina final and secured a second-place finish to earn a Champions League spot during her tenure at Bodymoor Heath.
Villa is just two points away from seventh place in the WSL, but they are now in ninth place. However, Spurs, who are in sixth place and ahead of Liverpool, are seven points behind. Of all the teams in the Women’s Premier League, Chelsea presents the most difficult test. They are undefeated this season, having won 11 of their 12 games and drawn one, and they won the league the previous season.
Johanna Rytting Kaneryd scored the game’s lone goal just before halftime in September, helping Sonia Bompastor’s team defeat Villa 1-0. With 13 shots, five of which were on goal, and more possession of the ball, Villa proved to be a formidable opponent for the champs.
