Exclusive: Matt Grimes medical update after Swansea to Coventry transfer agreed

Swansea midfielder Matt Grimes is set for a medical at Coventry on Thursday after both clubs agreed a fee for his services, sources have told Football Insider.

The Swansea captain signed a new contract in August 2024 but is now poised to make the switchafter full agreement between the clubs on a transfer fee.

Grimes has also settled on personal terms to join Frank Lampard with the Sky Blues.

The 29-year-old has been a key player for Swansea since joining from Exeter almost ten years ago, making 333 appearances and scoring 16 goals.

This season, Grimes has featured in every match for Luke Williams’ side, starting all 32 of the club’s games across all competitions.

Coventry set to land Matt Grimes in blow to Swansea City

Lampard’s Coventry are active in the transfer market and have been eager to strengthen their midfield options. Football Insider revealed that they are also pursuing Oxford United star Tyler Goodrham.

The move for Grimes would be a significant coup as they look to strengthen their squad. Grimes has indicated an eagerness to join the club, with a medical already lined up.

While Swansea await confirmation of the deal, it remains to be seen if Grimes could be available for Coventry’s upcoming match against his former side on 1 February.

For Luke Wiliams’ side, the loss of Grimes puts added pressure on their transfer plans as the window nears its close.

The club are pursuing Leyton Orient midfielder Ethan Galbraith to bolster their midfield, but the focus will likely turn to finding a defensive midfield replacement for Grimes.

His departure would not only create a void on the pitch but also in terms of leadership, as the captain has been a pivotal figure for the team.

Lampard’s side are currently 12th in the Championship and are on a run of three consecutive league victories. They are four points ahead of Swansea as the two sides will face each other in what promises to be a crucial encounter on 1 February.
