Derby County confirms €2.4 million third January transfer after deal reached.

Matt Clarke, a defender who is returning to Pride Park for a third stint with the team, has been signed by Derby County from Middlesbrough.

After Derby and Boro came to an undisclosed arrangement, the center-back signed a contract through the end of the season. The move helps make up for Curtis Nelson’s injury, which will keep him out for the remainder of the season.

Clarke, who has made 17 appearances this season and scored two goals in a win against Cardiff and a draw against Portsmouth, has been in and out of Boro’s promotion-chasing squad.

The defender is now scheduled to make his debut this weekend against Sheffield United. Derby also hopes to bolster their defense once again in the days leading up to the Blades’ visit.

After joining Derby from Brighton during the 2019–20 season, Clarke enjoyed two successful loan stints at Pride Park, which Derby supporters remember with fondness. In 2020–21, he made 81 appearances across all competitions while spending a further season on loan with Derby.

He then had another loan stint with West Brom before securing a transfer to Boro for an unknown sum. Since then, he has made 53 appearances at the Riverside. When asked about Clarke’s future in recent days, Boro manager Michael Carrick stated he could not rule out the 28-year-old leaving the team.

However, the Premier League team is getting closer to a price that would persuade Derby to let go of the center-back, who is eager to transfer to the south coast.
