Today, Nottigham Forest broke the Premier League record set by Derby County.
Every promoted team must rapidly hit two important milestones:
winning a Premier League match and earning enough points to ensure Derby County maintains their illustrious record of the lowest total ever attained.
The ultimate goal is to stay in the Premier League and avoid being relegated back to the EFL Championship,
but Burnley, Sheffield United,
and Luton Town must be wondering when they will get to the base camp of their first win.
Derby finished 2007–08 with 11 points, winning just one of their 38 games,
1-0 against Newcastle United at home in September.
Even that awful Derby team had already won a game by this point,
thus the longer the promoted clubs from the previous season had to wait,
the more they will be afraid to break that record.
In addition to being the lowest total in the Premier League,
eleven points is the worst return in all four of England’s professional divisions since teams began receiving three points for a victory more than 40 years ago.
With one point apiece, the three promoted teams occupy the three relegation slots after six weeks of the 2023–24 season.
After losing to Newcastle 8-0 at home last Sunday,
Sheffield United, led by Paul Heckingbottom, are stuck at the bottom of the table on goal differential.
Due to their 20 goals in 2020–21, which matched Derby’s tally during their terrible season,
the Blades already share the record for the fewest goals scored in a Premier League season.
