Just In: Matchday Recollections: Today, 1983, in Norwich Draw Between Nick and Sexton’s Sky Blues for the H.R. Cup
Dave Sexton’s Coventry City and Norwich City faced off in an FA Cup Fourth round match at Highfield Road on this day in 1983 (January 29). Having already defeated the Canaries 2-0 at home at the end of October of last year gave them hope. When the Sky Blues took a 2-0 lead with to goals from CCFPA members Garry Thompson (40 minutes, off a cross by Steve Whitton) and Brian “Harry” Roberts (65 minutes), who later became the current Club host for CCFC, it appeared to be more of the same. Danny Thomas participated in this match as a midfielder.
In order to force a replay at Carrow Road, the Sky Blues, who started with eight homegrown players, allowed the lead to slip and allowed the Canaries to retake the game. They then scored two goals through on-loan Age Hareide (70 minutes, looking offside) and Mark Barham three minutes from time, taking advantage of a mistake by Gerry Francis. Steve Hunt, a winger for the City and a relatively new member of the CCFPA, seems to have lost some of his spark. 13,083 people were present.
The following were Dave Sexton’s Sky Blues that day, as highlighted by current CCFPA members:
