Memories of a Cup Derby Match: On This Day in 1974, There Was No Sunday Sky Blue Score
On this day (January 27, 1974), Coventry City played their first Sunday game at
Highfield Road against Derby County in the F.A. Cup Fourth Round.
After a scoreless draw at Hillsborough, they defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-1
at Highfield Road in the Third Round replay. After sharing responsibilities
with Joe Mercer the season before, this was manager Gordon Milne’s first season in complete control.
An incredible atmosphere was created with 41,281 people crammed into the
Sky Blues’ old stadium (the largest since 1963) and a kickoff at 2 p.m. Even though it was thrilling and captivating with the defenses in control, the end-to-end action ended in a scoreless draw with the Sky Blues performing a touch below their best.
Henry Newton of the Rams was magnificently stopped by Sky Blues goalie Bill Glazier. However, Alan Dugdale and Les Cartwright both struck the woodwork, and referee Homewood denied the City’s strong last-minute penalty appeal! Referee: B. Homewood The Rams were represented by: Colin Boulton, Ron Webster, David Nish, Henry Newton, Roy McFarland, Colin Todd, Steve Powell, Archie Gemmill, Jeff Bourne, Kevin Hector, and Alan Hinton. Three days later, the game was replayed at the baseball ground, and City won 1-0 thanks to a goal from CCFPA member David Cross in extra time. However, the Sky Blues lost to Queen’s Park Rangers in the Fifth Round after a replay after another goalless draw at Highfield Road.
