JUST IN: Despite the unfortunate factor of Ross Stewart, Sunderland AFC’s £2.5m transfer gamble failed.

The Ukrainian, who was signed by the Wearsiders for £2.5 million in the summer of 2023, brought hopes of a prolific forward after scoring 13 goals in 30 matches for Zorya Luhansk in the 2022-23 season.

Regrettably, this caliber of contribution did not manifest at the Stadium of Light, as the striker netted only two goals for the Black Cats during the 2023–24 season.

Now, he has moved on, although it’s only temporary for the moment. If he has indeed played his last game for the club, Sunderland fans will want to quickly forget this deal. However, he may have been unlucky to have to replace a highly productive forward.

Nazariy Rusyn’s transfer from Sunderland to Hajduk Split is beneficial for all involved

It appeared unavoidable in January that Rusyn’s spell on Wearside would conclude, and the club has now verified this with his loan transfer to HNK Hajduk Split

The deal, as specified by the Black Cats, contains an option for the Croatian side to make it permanent after their campaign ends.

Balkans Sports reports that the fee to finalize the transfer is set at €2.5 million (£2.1 million), which is slightly less than what the club paid for the striker in 2023. It is thought, however, that Zorya holds a 20% sell-on clause, meaning Sunderland will not get the entire transfer amount.

To guarantee this kind of return for a player with such low confidence levels is, however, a remarkable transaction – provided that Hajduk activates the summer buy option.
