Rangers are not likely to make a move on senior players James Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers this

winter, according to former Aberdeen manager Keith Wyness.

The 67-year-old, who was CEO of Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004, had long stints as the head of

Everton and Aston Villa, and now owns a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, claimed the

Ibrox club had “missed the opportunity” to get the best deal for Tavernier, while Dessers is once

again the Gers’ “flavour of the month” on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.

Both players have been singled out for criticism by the Rangers fanbase with Philippe Clement’s side trailing Celtic by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Dessers has been linked with a potential return to Italy with Cagliari, while Tavernier has long been targeted by Turkish and Saudi Pro League sides as he enters his twilight years.

The duo impressed for a youthful Rangers side as they went down 2-1 in stoppage time against Man United on Thursday (23 January).

Despite acknowledging that the Gers require a “younger nucleus,” Wyness maintained that both

players would stay at Ibrox until the summer transfer window.

“They’re in Europe with big games ahead,” he said on the Insider Track podcast of Football Insider.

Without a doubt, they have lost the chance to profit from Tavernier.

After missing some significant opportunities in recent weeks, Dessers has once again become the

player of the month.

Cashing in at some point is certainly the best course of action, but that most likely won’t happen until

the summer.

It all hinges on how well they can rebuild and how much talent they can bring in.

“There are undoubtedly some significant concerns regarding the youth academy and recruitment.

They require a younger nucleus in order to achieve age balance.
