Premier League owe Everton an explanation after what Jamie Vardy did during Tottenham 1-2 Leicester
Leicester, Everton’s relegation opponents, unexpectedly defeated Tottenham on Sunday to earn
three points.
With six points from games against Brighton and Tottenham since taking Sean Dyche’s place,
David Moyes has given the Toffees some breathing room in the Premier League.
However, Leicester’s unexpected 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, which was sparked by
Jamie Vardy’s equaliser just 58 seconds into the second half, allowed them to cut the gap between themselves and Everton to six points.
Everton supporters were undoubtedly left perplexed as the Leicester No. 9 celebrated his seventh Premier League goal of the year.
Jamie Vardy escapes yellow card despite Iliman Ndiaye booking
In case you missed it, Iliman Ndiaye chose to celebrate by imitating a seagull during Saturday’s
1-0 victory over Brighton, which led to his oddly weird booking.
Excessive celebration was the official reason for that yellow card.
“Players can celebrate when a goal is scored, but the celebration must not be excessive;
choreographed celebrations are not encouraged and must not cause excessive time wasting,
” states Law 12 of the IFAB Laws of the Game.
We don’t think that Ndiaye’s celebration was excessive in the first place, but if imitating a
seagull is considered offensive to rival supporters, we don’t see how Vardy got away with it on
Sunday.
In order to remind Tottenham supporters of the time Leicester defeated Spurs to win the Premier League title in 2016, Vardy chose to rub his goal in their noses by sprinting directly towards the home crowd and pointing at the Premier League emblem on his arm before raising one finger.
