Middlesbrough chasing £5m deal for 15-goal striker
Middlesbrough are chasing a £5m deal for Slovan Bratislava talisman David Strelec,
reporter Alan Nixon has claimed on his Patreon.
Middlesbrough are looking to strengthen their push for promotion with some eye-catching moves this month.
Boro sit 6th in the Championship table, though they were beaten 2-1 by Preston North End on Saturday.
The inconsistency showed by Michael Carrick’s side is a worry,
because they’re capable of being one of the most dangerous sides in the league on their day.
As such, they’re not resting on their laurels and despite already making some eye-catching signings,
more are on the radar.
Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon states that Middlesbrough are targeting a deal for 23-year-old ace David Strelec. The Slovakian currently plays as a striker for Slovan Bratislava in his native, testing himself against Champions League opposition this season.
It is said a move of £5m is being targeted for Strelec, who would ‘jump’ at the chance to move to Teesside with Boro. He is waiting on an agreement to be finalised before hopefully moving over to England.
Strelec is under contract until 2028 but may well be on the move this summer with Middlesbrough keen.
More on Strelec
Middlesbrough target Strelec started his career in the Slovan Bratislava academy before moving over to Italy with Spezia Calcio in 2021. After a loan with Reggina, he would move back to Slovakia with his first club on loan, then returning on a permanent basis in the summer.
However, after a strong return, Bratislava may well make a quick profit on Strelec.
He has 15 goals and six assists to his name in 34 games this season. Six Champions League games to date may have all ended in defeat, but the striker has managed two goals after starring in the qualifying stages as well.
Overall, Strelec has 47 goals and 25 assists to his name in 147 games for the club. The Boro target also has seven goals in 28 games for his country.
Should the focus be elsewhere?
Middlesbrough are clearly a side that sees games won by their attack more often than they’re won by the defence.
Many believe the backline could do with work, but even after already bringing in Morgan Whittaker this month, it seems their attacking business is not done with Strelec being lined up.
Whether the focus turns to the backline afterwards, it remains to be seen. A goalkeeper wouldn’t go amiss either, while there’s likely to be a departure at left-back after the loan return of Ryan Giles.
