Aston Villa faces competition from Chelsea for ‘Serbian Messi’ after their first €10 million proposal was turned down.
This season, the youthful player from Red Star Belgrade has captivated Europe’s best. Maksimovic has already made his senior debut for Serbia and is known as “Serbian Lionel Messi” in his native country due to his impressive exploits.
The 17-year-old forward began the season with Graficar, a second-tier feeder team of Crvena Zvezda, but it soon became clear that he was prepared for first-team action.

Since being promoted, Maksimovic hasn’t looked back and is now a Red Star regular starter. In a resounding 3-0 victory over Vojvodina on Sunday, he scored his first goal in the top flight, and his confidence is still growing.
Maksimovic will turn 18 in June, but the Reds might loan him out once more for the 2025–2026 season based on his progress to guarantee him consistent first-team playing time.
The Serbian international was valued at about €15 million when he first caught the attention of major European clubs. He might, however, become more costly between now and January or the summer if his current performance holds.
