DONE DEAL: Sheffield Wednesday strike vital Southampton agreement amid Sheffield United interest
Sheffield Wednesday have stuck a deal to keep Shea Charles on loan for the rest of the season, according to the Mirror (Transfer news live, 24/01/25, 07:43).
Sheffield Wednesday have faced a challenging transfer window to date but it is still hoped they can strike some valuable deals. SWFC owner Dejphon Chansiri and Danny Rohl look to have settled their differences, so hopefully they can kick on from here.
One of the big sagas at Hillsborough has surrounded loan favourite Shea Charles. Southampton made the call to recall the Northern Irishman last week and it was expected that the game against Bristol City would be his last.
However, murmurs of a positive outcome emerged on Thursday, and it seems the Owls are now set to keep thee influential midfielder.
The Mirror reports on their transfer news live feed that an agreement has now been reached between Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton for Charles to see out the full season at Hillsborough. Fresh terms and a six-figure loan fee have been agreed.
Charles himself is said to have pushed for a stay with SWFC, much to the delight of their loyal fans.
It hopefully puts an end to any speculation of a move to arch rivals Sheffield United.
Staying put
Sheffield Wednesday have seen Charles become a vital player in the middle of the park over the campaign to date.
He arrived as a player viewed as a top prospect but he has affirmed that he’s very much a star already. The 21-year-old has offered a combative and physical presence in the middle alongside Barry Bannan, but the technical side of his game developed at Manchester City and Southampton has been clear to see too.
A move elsewhere for Charles would have left SWFC with a huge gap to plug in the middle of the park. Nevertheless, he now looks set to remain, ending hopes of his opportunistic admirers elsewhere.
Looking ahead
With the Charles saga seemingly coming to a close, it will be hoped the focus can turn elsewhere for Sheffield Wednesday.
Additions are needed to bolster Rohl’s ranks for the remainder of the campaign. Without them, the feeling is that their push for the play-offs might fizzle out as the season progresses.
Up next for the Owls is a tough trip to QPR, who have been in fine form of late. A win would see SWFC move back ahead of the Rs in the Championship table.
