Rayan Cherki’s situation at Lyon has caught the attention of several big European clubs in January.
The midfielder looks set to leave the French club this month after the player reached an agreement with the president of Olympique Lyonnais, John Textor, in the summer when he signed a new contract that he could leave for €22.5m (£19m).
Fabrizio Romano has stated that Liverpool appreciate Cherki, with the transfer expert stating that the Reds have been scouting the 21-year-old and are following his situation at Lyon closely.
This is a deal that falls right into the Merseyside club’s ballpark as the French star is very young and can be obtained for a relatively low transfer fee.
However, the hierarchy at the Premier League leaders may need to decide on the 21-year-old fast, as Bayern Munich are also interested in the midfield talent.
Bayern Munich join the race for Liverpool target Rayan Cherki
Liverpool have been linked to Cherki for some time now as the youngster looks to be a talent who could potentially join Arne Slot’s squad in 2025.
The Reds are unlikely to make a move for the French international during the current transfer window with a summer move the strongest possibility.
This is a similar plan to Bayern Munich, with the German giants also believed to be showing a strong interest in the 21-year-old.
Bayern insider Christian Falk has stated that Cherki is on the Bundesliga club’s shortlist, however, Bayern Munich are happy to wait until the summer to get a deal over the line.
“Bayern have Rayan Cherki on their shortlist. The club is interested in the player,” Falk has told CaughtOffside. “Lyon would be prepared to sell him in the winter for around £19m, but FC Bayern does not want to make a deal in January; Cherki is looking like a stronger candidate for the summer.
“The two clubs have a good relationship in part because Michael Gerlinger – who previously worked with Bayern for 18 years – is now the Global Football Director of the Eagle Football Holdings group, of which Olympique Lyonnais is a part.”
Cherki is without a doubt a top talent, but do Liverpool really need the 21-year-old with players such as Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones already at Anfield?
Harvey Elliott is the future of Liverpool’s midfield
Cherki has starred in France this season with the midfielder producing five goals and eight assists across 23 appearances in all competitions – which results in one goal contribution every 110.53 minutes.
Elliott’s season has so far been compromised by a foot injury which has left the 21-year-old playing just 12 times this term, producing two goals and one assist within 292 minutes of action.
From the outset, this does not look good for the Reds midfielder, however, the Englishman has had a big impact in Liverpool’s latest wins over Brentford and Lille.
Arne Slot is ready to give Elliott a chance at Liverpool as the youngster has been applying himself well in training and in competitive action.
Elliott plays in the same positions as Cherki, therefore, it would be more beneficial for the Reds to spend their money on other areas of concern, with Jamie Carragher pointing out that Liverpool need a left-sided defender.
