Alan Nixon criticizes Stoke City for accepting Millwall defender Danny McNamara’s initial offer.

The news that Millwall defender Danny McNamara will be out for a long time due to a knee injury has dealt a serious blow to Stoke City’s ambitions of acquiring him.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Stoke was considering making a permanent bid for the 26-year-old McNamara, and the Potters were reportedly considering a loan deal.

A graduate of the Millwall youth, McNamara had become a vital member of the Lions squad in recent years following loan stints with Welling United, Dover Athletic, Havant & Waterlooville, Newport County, and St Johnstone.

With only 15 appearances in all competitions this season—just nine of which came from the start—McNamara has lost his spot in the starting lineup, and it appeared that his career at The Den was in jeopardy.

According to reports, Millwall was “open” to letting McNamara leave this month, but he may now stay with the team as he recovers from what appears to be a permanent ailment.

With defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand joining on loan from Manchester City, Stoke is currently in 19th place in the Championship standings, two points above the relegation zone. However, given the news of McNamara’s injury, new manager Mark Robins may need to look at other options.
