The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for their next head coach as of this writing. They will have

spent two weeks on the process if they don’t have one by Friday at the latest.

However, it took the Cowboys a full week to realise they would require a head coach. On the eighth

day of their offseason, Dallas famously decided that they needed to split ways with Mike McCarthy

after spending the first week of the season trying to work things out.

The Cowboys paid for their prolonged wait in a number of ways. In the end, Detroit Lions

coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn were hired as head coaches (with the Chicago Bears

and New York Jets, respectively) without Dallas ever receiving a formal interview because they

were unable to request a virtual interview with staffers from the teams that held the top seeds in

each conference.

However, the Cowboys lost another candidate as a result of waiting. The New England Patriots announced Mike Vrabel as their new head coach at a news conference about one or two hours after

they made their McCarthy choice. When Dallas realised the McCarthy problem, they questioned him

and others before choosing Vrabel and landing him.

We can argue that because of Vrabel’s past with the team, New England always had the inside scoop,

but Robert Kraft jumped at the chance when he realised Jerry Jones and the Cowboys would be interested, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

It may not be the biggest deal in the world, but having an interest is one thing. However, it underlines how the Cowboys’ handling of the McCarthy ruling and all that followed has been a flawed procedure in general.

We can all argue over whether Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson, or Aaron Glenn were the best pick for Dallas. But once more, the Cowboys made deliberate choices that made it impossible for them to speak with any of them.

If you want to win, you just can’t do it that way.
