A Sheffield Wednesday fan was punished for making a derogatory message about a West Brom fan who passed away during a game.

Following the murder of an away fan at Hillsborough Stadium last year,

a Sheffield Wednesday supporter has “apologised unreservedly” for posting an inflammatory message on social media.

At Sheffield Magistrates Court, Richard Crisp, of Lennox Road in Sheffield,

was given a 12-month community order today after entering a guilty plea to the

September 2024 allegation of “Malicious Communication.” All of this followed the passing of

West Brom supporter Mark Townsend, who died at Hillsborough after suffering a medical

emergency during the Owls’ Championship match against the Baggies in September of last year.

The court had previously heard how Richard Crisp, who had consumed a lot of

alcohol as a result of the stress in his personal life, made “offensive” statements about

the Hillsborough tragedy on the internet following the game.

He was given a year-long community order by the judge, along with £199 in court

costs that he must reimburse within 28 days.

The 55-year-old “apologises unreservedly to all the people he affected & for the upset & anger he caused,”

according to a statement read out on his behalf by his attorney.
