Rangers ruled out in international hunt despite club signing £9.3m replacement – report
Rangers fans didn’t appear to get the memo when it comes to loan players.
They say that football fans should never fall in love with those who move to their clubs on
temporary deals but it never seems to work out that way at Ibrox.
Brighton loanee Abdallah Sima fired his way into Rangers hearts last season and
now Vaclav Cerny has done the same during a temporary stint this season.
But if Rangers really do want to sign the Czech international down permanently,
then it appears they’ll need to open their chequebook.
Wolfsburg sign Vaclav Cerny replacement
Vaclav Cerny was very highly-rated coming through at Ajax but it never happened in Amsterdam and
the winger was moved around the Netherlands.
After stints with Utrecht and FC Twente, Cerny eventually earned a move to Bundesliga side
VfL Wolfsburg in a deal worth up to €7m (£6m) in 2023.
Things didn’t really work out in Germany last season, despite Vaclav Cerny scoring five goals in 25 games and
laying on a solitary assist.
Rangers were seen as an opportunity for Cerny to restart his career and after
an initially challenging start to live at Ibrox, the winger has been the Gers’ man of the moment this season.
But VfL Wolfsburg already appear to be moving on from the 27-year-old Czech winger,
who has 12 goals for Rangers this season.
Having just announced a deal for once Rangers-linked Club Brugge winger Andreas Skov Olsen,
it’s left Cerny’s future somewhat up in the air.
Given the Germans paid €11m (£9.3m) for the Danish international winger,
who like Cerny is a left-footed right-winger, Skov Olsen is expected to play.
Rangers ‘don’t have the money’ Vaclav Cerny
Kicker have been discussing what the signing of Andreas Skov Olsen means for the future of Vaclav Cerny at Wolfsburg.
The German outlet claim that both players share distinct similarities and
that the arrival of the Danish international means a return to Wolfsburg is ‘extremely unlikely’.
So where then might the Robben-esque right-winger end up?
Well firstly the report explains that Rangers have no purchase option on the winger and that the Ibrox club ‘don’t have the money’ to pay Cerny’s €9.5m (£8m) asking price.
Cerny too wants to leave Wolfsburg, with Patrick Wimmer, Tiago Tomas,
Jakub Kaminski or Mohammed Amoura all options on the right for the Bundesliga outfit.
The report then references links to West Ham in the Premier League,
whilst La Liga side Villarreal have also been mentioned alongside Cerny.
Cerny previously discussed his own future back in November and admitted he’d be open to a
permanent move to Ibrox.
“If it’s up to me, I would be open to talk obviously, but I think it’s very,
very soon to talk about that,” Cerny said.
“If you don’t mind, just let me focus on helping the team and achieve what we want to achieve,
me personally and as a club.
“I think we’ve got plenty of time to talk about this.”
